Man Coverage Drill

Defense Coverageintermediate15 min3+ players

Description

Man coverage is the ultimate test of a defender's athleticism and technique. This drill builds the hip movement, footwork, and discipline to stay with a receiver through any route — and reinforces the habit of going for the flag, not the body.

Instructions

  1. WR lines up at the LOS. DB lines up tight, inside leverage.
  2. On the snap, WR runs any route.
  3. DB mirrors the WR's hips, staying within arm's length.
  4. No grabbing — stay with technique.
  5. When the ball is thrown, DB turns and goes for the flag.
  6. Run multiple route types to build versatility.

Points to Stress

  • Stay between the WR and the QB — that's your job.
  • Mirror the HIPS, not the shoulders or head — hips don't lie.
  • Don't turn your back to the QB.
  • When the ball is thrown, GO for the flag immediately.
