Defense Coverage
Defense Coverage Drills for flag football coaches
Coverage techniques, zone defense, and man-to-man drills for flag football defenders.
Coverage in flag football demands more sustained technique than in any other version of the game — with no pass rush guaranteed, defensive backs must stay with receivers through longer routes and rely entirely on footwork and positioning. These drills build the fundamentals of both man and zone coverage: press technique, mirroring footwork, zone drops, and breaking on the ball at the catch point. Flag football defenders who work their coverage mechanics consistently become much harder to beat on crossing routes, seam routes, and deep comebacks. Coaches who prioritize coverage reps in practice field defenses that hold up in one-score games.

Open drill page →Pedal Break 90 (DB Drill)
DB back-pedals reading the QB, then plants and drives forward at a 90° angle to break on the throw — building the reactive footwork that separates good DBs from great ones.
Open drill page →The Zone Drill
Field is divided into zones — each defender holds their area while the QB throws to various zones, forcing defenders to break on the ball at the catch point.
