Catch and Go (Interception Drill)

QB throws a catchable but slightly errant pass — DB reads the QB, steps in front of the receiver, and intercepts it for a turnover.

Step In Front
CQBWRDB

Description

Turnovers change games. This drill builds the QB-reading instincts and technique to step in front of a pass and come away with an interception — one of the highest-value plays a defender can make.

How to run it

  1. 1

QB, WR, and DB set up in a route-coverage situation.

  2. 2

QB throws to WR but leads slightly early or underthrows.

  3. 3

DB reads the QB's eyes and throwing motion.

  4. 4

DB steps in front of the WR's route.

  5. 5

DB catches the ball with hands (not body) and sprints upfield.

Points to stress

  • Read the QB's eyes — if they lock onto a receiver, jump the route.
  • Catch with your hands — don't body-catch it.
  • Secure the ball and RUN — don't celebrate before you're safe.
  • Go for the INT — not just a PBU.
