Man Coverage Drill
DB mirrors a WR running any route, staying tight without grabbing, then turns and goes for the Ball/flag at the catch point.
Man Coverage Drill
DrillDescription
Man coverage is the ultimate test of a defender's athleticism and technique. This drill builds the hip movement, footwork, and discipline to stay with a receiver through any route — and reinforces the habit of going for the flag, not the body.
How to run it
- 1
WR lines up at the LOS. DB lines up tight, inside leverage.
- 2
On the snap, WR runs any route.
- 3
DB mirrors the WR's hips, staying within arm's length.
- 4
No grabbing — stay with technique.
- 5
When the ball is thrown, DB turns and goes for the ball if they can and flag if they are not close enough.
- 6
Run multiple route types to build versatility.
Points to stress
- Stay between the WR and the QB — that's your job.
- Mirror the HIPS, not the shoulders or head — hips don't lie.
- Don't turn your back to the QB.
- When the ball is thrown, GO for the flag immediately.
