Changing Direction / Route Break Drill
WR runs through a zigzag cone course, making sharp cuts at each cone to build the plant-and-drive technique that powers every route break.
Changing Direction / Route Break Drill
DrillDescription
Every route in football depends on the ability to stop quickly and accelerate in a new direction. This drill isolates that moment — the plant and drive — so players can develop the muscle memory before applying it to full routes.
How to run it
- 1
Set 5-6 cones in a zigzag pattern, 4-5 yards apart.
- 2
WR starts at the first cone.
- 3
WR runs to each cone and makes a sharp cut at every one.
- 4
Emphasize: plant foot down, drive off, accelerate.
- 5
Run the course multiple times, alternating lead foot.
Points to stress
- Get skinny through the cut — don't round your corners.
- Weight on your inside foot as you plant.
- Accelerate HARD after every cut — don't drift.
- Low = fast. Stay low through the cut.
