Back Shoulder
WR runs down the sideline, cuts out, and catches a high arcing ball — practicing the lean-back, look-up catch along the boundary.
Back Shoulder
DrillDescription
Catching high, back-shoulder throws near the sideline is one of the most game-specific skills a receiver can develop. This drill builds the ability to adjust to an arcing pass and secure it while in motion near the boundary.
How to run it
- 1
WR lines up at the LOS.
- 2
WR runs down the sideline for 8-10 yards.
- 3
WR cuts sharply outward (toward the sideline).
- 4
QB throws a high arcing ball to the cut spot.
- 5
WR leans back, looks up, and catches the ball.
Points to stress
- Lean into the catch — trust your balance.
- Keep your eyes on the ball through the entire arc.
- Secure the ball high before coming down.
- Don't break stride to look — find the ball while running.
