How to coach Fake Reverse

A counter off Reverse action that lets the first ball carrier keep the play while defenders chase the fake across the field.

Call Fake Reverse after the defense has seen the real Reverse and started shifting hard toward the motion player.

In 6v6, expect one extra body near the ball. The runner needs to cut earlier instead of trying to outrun everyone sideways.

Coaching Notes

Fake Reverse is a sequencing play. It is strongest when the defense has a clear memory of the real reverse and wants to beat the second handoff to the sideline.

The sell matters more than the trick. The back should show the ball early enough for defenders to see it, but keep control and get vertical as soon as the defense commits to the fake exchange.

When To Call It

  • Two or three plays after Reverse has gained yards or forced a big pursuit reaction.
  • Against defenders who turn their shoulders toward motion before confirming the ball.
  • When backside pursuit is fast but undisciplined.
  • After you have reminded the runner to sell the fake and then get north-south.

Ball Carrier Coaching Point

Show the ball, let the defense see the reverse action, then keep it tight and cut into the space they vacated. The runner should not keep drifting sideways after the fake.

Common Coaching Mistake

The common mistake is treating the fake as the finish. The fake creates the lane, but the runner still has to plant and attack it immediately.

Coaching Adjustments

  • 1If defenders ignore the fake, run the real Reverse again.
  • 2If the runner gets stuck outside, coach an earlier vertical cut off the fake.
  • 3If the fake exchange is unclear, exaggerate the ball show in walkthroughs before running it live.
