Small-sided 3v3 scrimmage (Center, QB, WR/RB vs. 2-3 defenders) run with real rules — coach stops play to correct mistakes and repeats the rep until done right.
Mini-Scrimmage
DrillDescription
Nothing trains football IQ faster than live reps. The mini-scrimmage gives every player more snaps than a full-team practice, while the coach-stop format turns every mistake into a teaching moment.
How to run it
- 1
Set up two mini teams: 3 offense (Center, QB, RB/WR) vs. 2-3 defense.
- 2
Create a mini field 20-30 yards long with end zones.
- 3
Play with full rules: snap, real routes, flag pulling.
- 4
Run two simultaneous games to keep everyone involved.
- 5
Coach stops play on any mistake, corrects it, and re-runs the play.
Points to stress
- Run real plays — use your snap count, routes, and assignments.
- Defense: communicate your coverage before every snap.
- Coach: stop and rewind on missed fundamentals — repetition is everything.
- Competition makes everyone faster and more focused.
