The Lava Drill
Sideline cones are 'lava' — ball carriers and receivers must catch near the boundary and stay inbounds, building spatial awareness and boundary management.
The Lava Drill
DrillDescription
Boundary awareness is a football IQ skill that many players never consciously develop. By making the sideline 'dangerous', this drill forces players to learn exactly where the edge is — and practice making catches while managing it.
How to run it
- 1
Mark the sideline with cones — these are 'lava'.
- 2
Ball carrier or receiver runs routes near the sideline.
- 3
QB delivers throws near the boundary.
- 4
Player must catch the ball and stay inbounds.
- 5
Add a flag puller near the boundary for extra challenge.
Points to stress
- Know your feet — spatial awareness is a skill, not an accident.
- Catch first, then adjust your feet.
- Don't look at the sideline while the ball is in the air.
- The boundary is your friend as a receiver — use it to your advantage.
