QB takes the snap and executes a proper 3 or 5-step drop with correct footwork before setting and throwing.
QB Drop-Back Drill (3 & 5 Step)
DrillDescription
A consistent drop-back is the foundation of every passing play. This drill isolates QB footwork so players can develop a balanced, repeatable drop before the complexity of receivers and coverage is added.
How to run it
- 1
Center and QB line up at the LOS.
- 2
Center snaps the ball.
- 3
QB executes the drop: open step, crossover step(s), plant foot.
- 4
QB sets in a balanced throwing stance.
- 5
QB throws to a cone target or receiver downfield.
- 6
Alternate between 3-step and 5-step drops each rep.
- 7
Add a roll-out variation as players improve.
Points to stress
- First step BACK — not sideways.
- Stay on the balls of your feet the whole drop.
- Set feet before you throw — don't throw off your back foot.
- Eyes downfield during the drop — act like you're reading a defense.
