How to coach Attack Deep

A vertical shot play for punishing defenses that crowd short routes, chase the run, or leave the middle of the field uncovered.

Call Attack Deep when safeties are flat-footed, corners are squatting on short throws, or the defense has started moving downhill to stop your run game.

In 7v7, the play works best when the QB reads safety structure before the snap and avoids throwing late into traffic.

Coaching Notes

This play is not just a hope throw. It should tell the quarterback where the space is before the ball leaves their hand. Against one safety, the outside routes are usually the first look. Against two safeties, the middle window often becomes the best answer.

The underneath outlet matters because it keeps the shot play from becoming all or nothing. If no deep route wins cleanly, the quarterback should have permission to take the short throw and keep the drive alive.

When To Call It

  • After repeated short completions have pulled defenders toward the line.
  • After a successful run or reverse that made safeties step forward.
  • Near midfield, where a completed deep throw can flip the possession.
  • Against a defense that has stopped backpedaling at the snap.

Quarterback Read

Identify the safety shell before the snap. One safety usually means check the outside routes first. Two safeties usually means look for the inside seam or middle window, then come down to the outlet.

Common Coaching Mistake

The common mistake is calling a deep play without giving the quarterback a throwaway answer. Keep the outlet live so the play still works when the defense protects deep.

Coaching Adjustments

  • 1If the QB is late, make the first read pre-snap and remove one side of the field from the progression.
  • 2If receivers are running into the same deep area, widen one route so the safety has to declare a side.
  • 3If the defense stays deep, stop forcing the shot and take the outlet until they come back down.
