In 7v7, play action can move multiple second-level defenders. Build the route with one deep option and one outlet so the QB does not overhunt the big play.

Coaching Notes

The fake is the play. The quarterback and running back need to make the first two beats look exactly like HB Dive: same stance, same mesh path, same tempo. If the fake is lazy, the defense has no reason to step up and the pass windows stay tight.

After the fake, the quarterback should reset their feet before throwing. Young QBs often drift backward while watching the route develop, which turns a clean play-action window into a late throw.

When To Call It

One or two plays after HB Dive has gained yards.
Against linebackers or safeties who are stepping toward every handoff.
On first down, when the defense is expecting another safe run or short pass.
After a timeout, when you can remind the back and quarterback to sell the fake together.

Quarterback Read

Look deep first after the fake, then work back to the intermediate or short outlet. The fake should buy the first window, but the quarterback still has to take the easy throw if the deep route is covered.

Common Coaching Mistake

The common mistake is rushing the fake so the quarterback can look downfield early. That tells the defense it is a pass before the route has time to open.

Coaching Adjustments

1If the deep route is always late, shorten it by 3-5 yards instead of asking the QB to wait longer.
2If the defense ignores the fake, run HB Dive again until they prove they will respect it.
3If pressure arrives quickly, make the back your immediate outlet after the fake.
